About the Department

Johns Hopkins University is widely regarded as one of the world's finest research institutions. It comprises an energetic community of students, scholars, researchers, and scientists. Each year, individuals from all over the United States and many different countries are drawn to the University by its reputation for outstanding achievements in academics and research. Johns Hopkins University consistently ranks among the top 15 universities by U.S. News and World Report.

The Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University is made up of internationally recognized faculty involved in all areas of contemporary chemical science, including many interdisciplinary areas interfacing chemistry with the fields of biology, medicine, physics and materials. There are currently ongoing research programs in analytical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, environmental chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical physics, surface chemistry, and theoretical chemistry. Achievements of the faculty in the department are highlighted by the many awards won each year by various faculty members, including prestigious NSF CAREER awards, Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards, Dreyfus New Faculty Awards, Young Investigator Awards from the American Cancer Society, DuPont and Eli Lilly, fellowships from the Sloan Foundation, Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awards, and Maryland Chemist of the Year Awards.

Graduate students make up the heart of our chemistry department, and the department strives to support students' individual needs. Each student is carefully advised and classes are traditionally quite small. Our graduate students, together with postdoctoral associates, have been distinguished with a number of prestigious predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, including those sponsored by the American Chemical Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. In addition, graduates of the department have gone on to assume positions of scientific leadership in private industry, as well as in some of the finest academic institutions in the world. The success of the department in attracting and training outstanding students can be measured by the distinguished careers of our recent graduates and postdoctoral fellows.

All the research groups in the department are housed in modern laboratory facilities, with the completion of a new chemistry building in September of 2003. This 44,300 square foot building was designed to house state-of-the-art facilities for eight faculty research groups in the department.  The remainder of the department is housed in Remsen Hall, which was completely renovated during 1991-1993. Remsen Hall has superb modern laboratory space, while maintaining the architectural appeal of a 1925 building.  Adjacent to the new chemistry building is an underground Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center for biological research.  This project is a joint initiative of the Biology, Biophysics, Chemistry, and Material Science Departments on Homewood Campus along with Biochemistry and Pharmacology on the Medical campus. The center currently houses two high-field spectrometers (600 and 800 MHz) will be installed in the center. The latter is a joint initiative with the JHU School of Medicine.  Funding has recently been secured for the acquisition of a second 600 MHz spectrometer, with a cryoprobe detector.
