On Line Application Chemistry Brochure No formal degree is required for admission, although entering students usually hold a bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry or a related science. Applicants are required to furnish transcripts of previous academic work, three letters of recommendation, and scores of Graduate Record Examinations, including the Advanced Chemistry Examination. The Department of Chemistry invites interested applicants to submit an On Line Application. Assistance with the application process is available. Candidates with questions and/or requests for assistance should contact the Admissions Committee's Academic Affairs Administrator: Academic Affairs Administrator Johns Hopkins University Department of Chemistry 3400 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218 Telephone: 410-516-7427 FAX: 410-516-8420 e-mail chem.grad.adm@jhu.edu Each student's background and interests determine the course of study. The normal program leads to the Ph.D. degree. A student is not usually accepted into the program for a terminal M.A. degree. Normally, the minimum course requirement for both the M.A. and the Ph.D. degrees is eight one-semester graduate courses in chemistry and related sciences. Exceptionally well-prepared students may ask for a reduction of these requirements. In addition, students may be required to participate in a seminar series. Requirements for the Ph.D. degree include a research dissertation worthy of publication, and a knowledge of chemistry and related material as demonstrated in departmental and Graduate Board oral examinations. Each student must serve as a teaching assistant for at least one year. Requirements for the M.A. degree, in addition to completion of formal course work, include a satisfactory performance on an oral examination. Research experience is considered to be an integral part of the M.A. degree. Accordingly, the departmental oral examination cannot be taken before the spring semester of the student's second year, after the student has had some research experience in our department. Exceptionally well prepared students can petition the Academic Standing Coordinator to take the exam earlier. About 80 fellowships, research appointments, and teaching assistantships are available for graduate students. There are no fixed admission requirements. Undergraduate majors in chemistry, biology, earth sciences, mathematics, or physics may apply as well as well-qualified individuals who will have received a B.A. degree. Johns Hopkins offers on-campus housing only to Freshman and Sophomore undergraduates. Junior and Senior undergraduates, along with all Graduate students, are responsible for securing off-campus housing. The University maintains a housing office to help students find suitable accommodations both on and off campus:
